Rough Luxe Hotel is like a hidden portal to a timeless view of London.
Situated on Birkenhead Street, right opposite the station, the hotel’s tatty exterior gives nothing away. The story within is more surprising.
A small hotel, Rough Luxe takes luxury to another place. It’s not acquirement of expensive things but an investment in the details of life: the art on your walls, the thread count of your sheets, the relationship to your personalized staff.
When the designer and gallery curator Rabih Hage began peeling back the layers of wallpaper, he discovered designs from almost every era since the place was built in the 1850s.
Hage set about preserving historic sections in every room, often in crudely exposed strips, adding panels of modern wallpaper, huge wall-sized photographs of Italian palazzos, comfortable custom-made beds, freestanding copper baths and beautiful antiques. Downstairs, delicious fresh breakfast from nearby Ottolenghi is served at a table made of wood salvaged from Brighton’s West Pier.
While Rough Luxe is a B&B, strictly speaking, there’s an honesty bar stocked with very good sparkling wine and the lovely manager Leo will happily rustle up freshly baked cakes for afternoon tea on request.
