40 Winks is not an ordinary London hotel.
40 Winks offers a smart and glamorous alternative for who work principally in the creative and fashion industries, and who are bored with the bland impersonality of most hotel chains. This special hotel welcome anyone who loves places that are different and quirky, who enjoys good conversation, and has a healthy appetite for life.
There’s no room service, no concierge, no tea and coffee-making facilities. Instead there are just two bedrooms in an opulently decorated Queen Anne house on Mile End Road.
You’ll find yourself entering the extraordinary and slightly eccentric world of interior designer David Carter. 40 Winks is his home, lovingly restored over the last 10 years and now a favourite for fashion shoots and stylish, in-the-know visitors looking for somewhere a little bit different to stay in the capital.
The carefully sourced pieces of furniture and well-loved bits and bobs have been artfully placed so that every corner of the four-floor house holds some surprise or other – a Beatles drum kit here, a stack of vintage suitcases there.
Unsurprisingly, then, each room is decorated differently, but with the same perfectly jumbled and extravagant style. The spacious room on the top floor of the building has bare wooden floorboards, a large and wonderfully comfortable double bed and a beautiful vintage dressing table.
“40 Winks is like walking into a dream, going on a journey into the world of somebody else’s imagination…. in this case, mine! It’s a wonderful piece of theatre.”
