Based Upon is a family company established in 2004 by twin brothers Ian and Richard Abell, who founded it on an ethos of open exploration and a commitment to continuous innovation. On this basis, over a dynamic decade, the brothers have built a rich and visionary team of 45 artists, craftspeople and designers, who work together with an international network of creative specialists to bring to life groundbreaking art and design works for clients around the world.
Based Upon travel globally to gather research and inspiration for projects. The studio’s first major international journey saw them travel from Porbander, India, the birthplace of their client’s grandfather; to the river Nile in Uganda, mapping his life story in order to create for him a priceless legacy artwork.

In 2005, a year later after its creation, Based Upon presented their first limited edition collection in Comme Des Garcons, Dover Street Market, London. This inaugural collection established the studio’s fundamental strength in creating unique design pieces imbued with a strong sense of narrative. Following the great success of their initial collection, and driven by an innovative creative approach, the studio hosted their first art, design and sound based exhibition on Brick Lane; ‘Based Upon Desire’.
This amazing interiors of Artesian Bar in London were created by Based Upon and has a lot of colour and inspiration in different cultures, which is the DNA of Based Upon Studio.
Based Upon have travelled the world, creating unique, personal works for clients internationally. Based Upon have exhibited at Masterpiece Fine Art Fair and at Christies, where their edition pieces outperformed expectations. In March, 2015, the studio will be unveiling their first major public sculptures in Hong Kong and London.
Based Upon’s creative process involves an evolving dialogue between artist and commissioning client, with each resulting work growing from an exchange of inspirations, ideas and memories to become a truly personal and inimitable legacy piece, priceless to those for whom it is made. Based Upon’s own edition works explore, through sculptural furniture pieces and fine art works, the sublime bond between man and nature.
