Clerkenwell Design Week 2018 has started today and it will be happening until the 24th of May. If you are a design lover, then you know that this is one of the most awaited London events of the year. According to the UK Environment Agency (UKEA), the ecological footprint of a cotton tote bag is 327 times worse than a regular plastic bag. Therefore, Your Tote Counts has the main goal to raise awareness regarding the ecological footprint, more specifically regarding the issue of a surplus of tote bags replacing unsustainable plastic bags. Students from Chelsea College of Art have set up an installation with Print Club London to encourage the reuse of old totes.
Recycled totes will be upcycled live at the festival, with five designs selected from Chelsea College of Art graphic design students.

This isn’t the first time that Scale Rule gives St. James’ Churchyard a new focal point by realizing a pavilion design conceived by GCSE students from around London. This year’s construction is a response to the topic of sustainability. Made up of layers of interwoven string the creation invites visitors to direct their eyes upwards and observe natural elements around them. The project is generously supported by AKT II, Grimshaw, Jewson, WUP Doodle and Callprint.
In collaboration with Amari Interiors and Timberfusion, the London-based art and design studio Kinetech Design will be erecting a large kiri-origami structure in St.John’s Gate, hich saw the first performances of some of William Shakespeare’s most famous works, including Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth. The installation, titled Royal Approval, has been designed to mirror a giant Elizabethan ruff.
Hakwood will collaborate with Shape London this year to deliver an exciting, interactive installation with a three-metre-high pop-up street scene of the Dutch townhouse, decorated with pink tiles, at Clerkenwell Design Week named ‘Behind Closed Doors.’ Located at the entrance to London’s Spa Fields, each of the houses will feature a small door that, when opened, will reveal a series of miniature interiors containing Hakwood flooring.
Lou Corio Randall showcases his new approach to street furniture with this playful bench that will be found in all corners of Clerkenwell. These colorful pieces will include benches and bicycle racks. ‘I wanted to move away from the mundane archetype of street furniture and address the need for bike storage,’ Randall says.
