Add some glitz and glamour to your New Year’s Day with an easy-going brunch at Jason Atherton’s swanky Modern European dining room in the new Edition Hotel, open for service throughout the day.
Meal for two with drinks and service: around £140.
Specialising in stylish pan-Indian tapas, Amaya is favoured by a clientele of well-heeled professionals blessed with good taste and deep pockets. The sleek cocktail bar and dining area are furnished with a seductive mix of black granite, dark wooden fitting, terracotta statues and a splash of modern art. Ask for a table by the open kitchen for a view of chefs working the clay tandoor, charcoal grill and griddle. Recent menu additions include fragrant and tender chicken thighs steeped in fresh turmeric with lime juice then seared in the tandoor.

‘One dish, one style; a hundred dishes, a hundred tastes.’ Baiwei (which means ‘a hundred flavours’ in Chinese) exemplifies this Sichuanese culinary adage. This more poetic name has now replaced the unsavoury moniker the restaurant opened with – ‘Big Leap Forward’ – which stuck in the throats for some. (The Chinese characters pictured in the propaganda painting above translates as ‘drumming support for The Great Leap Forward’.)
The Mao-era decor remains, but it’s a cosy place with a lengthy selection of authentic, home-style Sichuan, Hunan and northern dishes served with uncommonly friendly service.
Over in Moorgate, Angler restaurant has a good terrace to see the firework around London from. Their £200 menu features dishes like Cornish turbot with line caught squid and bonito dashi and a dessert of warm baked chocolate with banana milk and Jersey cream.

Their second sitting of a 6 course tasting menu featuring a deluxe sashimi platter and grilled Japanese Wagyu is £275 – there’s a free first cocktail, early morning (from 1am) snacks and live entertainment and music. Groups of six minimum.
Across town, another high-rise where you’re sure to be looked after well, with Fred in charge of things, is Galvin at Windows. Their New Year festivities are £495.00 per person for a five-course meal which kicks off with canapes and a glass of champagne and also features an amuse-bouche and coffee and petit fours. Live music is courtesy of the Blue Planet Orchestra.
