Lumiere London | Artichoke, a creative trust which produces magical, large-scale events across the globe, are behind the project, and the likes of Julian Opie and Janet Echelman have created work for the nocturnal art trail. Neons, projections and performances are set to sparkle across central London providing relief from the winter blues and new ways of viewing the city.
Lights are for life, not just for Christmas. This city-wide collection of magical installations will be brightening our streets (and, in turn, our January) for four days Thursday January 14, and there are spectucular things in store. Lumiere festival lit up Durham for a fourth year in 2015, and some of its most impressive works have been adapted for its inaugural London edition.
The first four installations have now been announced. From Janet Echelman’s huge floating net sculptures, to a specially designed work by Julian Opie, there is lots to get excited about. Sign up to the newsletter now to stay up to date as more of the programme is revealed in the coming months.
Mischievous stick men will pose all over the buildings of Regent Street and a magnificent elephant hologram will march over Piccadilly. Trafalgar Square will host Centre point’s iconic neon signage for the weekend, as well as being invaded by a pack of neon dogs. A Mayfair phone box will become a glowing aquarium filled with live fish and a well-lit swimmer will dive into the King’s Cross Pond Club.
Lumiere is also produced in other locations such as Durham. With the nights closing in, there’s now one big reason to look forward to January. Get ready for the first major light festival to take place in London and prepare to be dazzled.
